What is Micro-needling?
Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves the use of a specialised device equipped with fine, sterile needles. These needles create controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin (essential proteins for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness).
How does Micro-needling work?
The micro-injuries caused by Micro-needling trigger the body’s natural healing process. This process results in increased collagen and elastin production, which helps to repair and renew the skin, giving it a more youthful and vibrant appearance.
The process of Micro-needling:
- Skin analysis in the consultation.
- Double cleanse.
- Numbing.
- Skin preparation.
- Micro-needling with special serum.
- Use a non-active moisturiser.
- (optional) LED light therapy session to further enhance the benefits.
- Follow the aftercare guidance.
What are the main benefits of Micro-needling?
- Reduction of fine lines and wrinkles – Micro-needling stimulates collagen production, helping to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and giving your skin a smoother, more youthful look.
- Enhanced skin texture – improve the overall texture of your skin by reducing roughness and promoting a softer, more even surface.
- Scar reduction – effectively minimise the appearance of scars, including acne scars, for a clearer and more refined complexion.
- Pore size reduction – Micro-needling can help to reduce the size of enlarged pores, resulting in a smoother and more polished appearance.
- Improved absorption of skincare products – post-treatment, your skin is more receptive to topical treatments, enhancing the efficacy of your skincare routine.
- Evens skin tone and pigmentation – address issues such as hyperpigmentation and sunspots, leading to a more uniform and balanced skin tone.
Is Micro-needling suitable for you?
Micro-needling is not suitable for people who:
- Have used Accutane (isotretinoin) within the last three months.
- Have open wounds, cuts or abrasions on the skin.
- Have blood clotting disorders, uncontrolled diabetes, or other conditions that affect wound healing should avoid Micro-needling (Nano-needling would be a safer option).
- Have had radiation treatment to the skin within the last year.
- Have any kind of current skin infection condition or herpes simplex in the area to be treated.
- Recently had cosmetic procedures – if you’ve recently had other cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels, laser treatments, or injectables like Botox or fillers, your skin needs time to heal before undergoing nano-needling. Allow 4 weeks minimum.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scars.
- Have a compromised immune system, whether due to illness, medication, or treatment, it might be best to avoid Micro-needling to prevent potential infections and complications.
- Have recent sunburn or sun exposure.
- Currently have active acne.
- Are under a period of increased stress.
Micro-needling can treat the following skin conditions:
- Mild or moderate acne scarring.

- Fine lines and wrinkles.
- Loose sagging skin.
- Skin texture.
- Pore size.
- Stretch marks.
- Textual irregularities.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it look like straight after?
As far as downtime goes you will experience mild redness and swelling after needling as well as needlepoint bleeding. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about after Micro-needling.
You can expect some mild dryness, flaking and tightness for around 5 to 7 days. The aftercare guidance we provide you with will walk you through how soon you can resume applying your normal skincare and how to care for your skin whilst the Micro-channels heal.
Will there be any pain or discomfort?
There is mild discomfort associated with Micro-needling. However, we will use a numbing cream to keep it as painless as possible, ensuring maximum comfort.
Can I wear makeup straight away?
It’s best to let your skin breathe but if you need to wear makeup, mineral foundation concealer can be used on your skin. I would highly recommend Tropic’s products for this and for your continued maintenance. Your skin healing process should not prevent you from engaging with any of your normal work or leisure activities.

How many treatments will I need?
Micro-needling is a treatment that requires maintenance. As far as treatment intervals go, we recommend 4 to 6 weeks as this gives the skin a chance to breathe, settle down and start seeing the changes. For optimum results, a course of treatment is recommended, usually no more than 6 sessions are required. We always suggest trying one Micro-needling session before committing to a course of treatments to make sure that it’s suitable for you.
Is there anything I need to avoid afterwards?
See our ‘Micro-needling aftercare guidance’ for advice on what to avoid after your treatment.
When will I start seeing results?
Many people are pleasantly surprised to see nearly immediate results from Micro-needling. As soon as the Micro-channels are created, the body’s natural wound healing process is triggered, initiating rapid self-repair. This stimulates collagen production and accelerates cellular turnover. Whilst some improvements can be seen right away, the most significant results typically become visible 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure, as collagen continues to build and enhance the skin’s texture and tone.
What if I just want a quick glow up?
If you just want a quick fix, Nano-needling is for you! Our Nano-needle only penetrates the first layer of the skin, making it an incredibly gentle option that’s best for boosting serum absorption.
