Removal Aftercare
During the healing period after tattoo removal , it’s crucial to protect the area to avoid infection, scarring, or pigment retention. Here’s what you should avoid:
1. Sun Exposure
- Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds for at least 2–4 weeks.
- UV exposure can cause pigmentation issues and slow healing.
2. Touching or Picking
- Don’t touch, pick, or scratch the scabs or flakes.
- This can lead to infection, scarring, and uneven removal results.
3. Sweating & Exercise
- Avoid heavy sweating, intense workouts, saunas, and hot yoga for 7–10 days.
- Sweat can irritate the area and introduce bacteria.
4. Water Exposure
- Keep the area dry for at least 48 hours.
- Avoid swimming, hot tubs, and long showers.
5. Makeup or Skincare Products
- Don’t apply makeup, lotions, or serums to the area until fully healed (usually 2 weeks).
- Many products contain irritants or bacteria.
6. Exfoliating or Active Skincare Ingredients
- Avoid retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and Vitamin C near the area.
- These can interfere with healing and cause irritation.
7. Alcohol & Smoking
- These can delay healing by affecting circulation and increasing the risk of complications.
What to expect for the first 48 hours:
- Within 1 hour the skin will begin to dry out.
- There will be some redness around the treated area which should subside within an hour or 2.
- The redness will turn brown as the skin dries.
- Avoid getting the area wet, dirty, sweaty or touching it.
- Clean pillow is recommended and if possible avoid sleeping face down.
- You may (if needed)dap the area with a damp cotton pad or gauze with sterile water to remove any excess oils or environmental dust.
What to expect after 48 hours:
- A scab will have formed.
- The skin will be dry enough to apply the prescribed aftercare serum to and around the area (A thin layer) with a clean cotton bud.
- If the area gets wet, gently dab a clean tissue over it but avoid wiping.
- The scab could remain attached for 5 to 14 days, depending on the treated area. Allow the scab to naturally remove itself, do not pick and peel.
- Avoid excessive movements as these will prolong healing.
After the scab has fallen off:
- Have a second appointment once the skin is the original colour. This is usually 8 weeks after but it can take longer.
Reasons to delay future appointments:
- If there is remaining redness around the treatment area.
- If the aftercare has not been strictly followed, the treatment area may stay discoloured for several months.
For skin that is prone to hyperpigmentation:
- For the first 48 hours, keep the skin dry to allow the scab to form.
- After 48 hours, ensure that the treated area does not dry out as this can cause hyperpigmentation.
